Forged engine pistons

Forged engine pistons are often used in motorsports when significantly increasing the power of the drive unit. This type of pistons is characterized by much greater durability than standard cast pistons. They guarantee resistance to high boost pressures and allow aggressive ignition settings.

Forged aluminum pistons - how do they differ from serial ?

High compression or high boost pressures of a high-performance engine, make tuners usually opt for the installation of more durable components made of forging. Such components are more resistant to high temperatures, knocking combustion, or extreme combustion pressure values.

 

The biggest difference between cast and forged pistons (forged pistons) is the way they are manufactured. Cast parts are created by pouring molten aluminum into a mold for shaping. The forging, in turn, begins life as a solid piece of aluminum and is heated and then molded in a press using tremendous compressive force, a process called forging. From a price point of view, the casting will be cheaper to produce and lighter, but won't be as durable as their tuning counterparts made from forging.

 

So what makes forging better for tuning applications than a cast part? The topic of durability comes down to how the grain flow of the material is arranged. The grain flow of a cast piston is not directionally aligned, so it is not as strong. This is because a cast piston is made from a molten mixture of metal, unlike a forged piston, which is produced from a single piece of material.
