Intercoolers
Intercooler - tuning air cooler
Intercooler FMIC.PL is the highest quality tuning air coolers, are used to increase the performance of turbocharged engines. It is the tuning intercooler that allows you to extremely effectively cool the air heated often to nearly 200'C pumped by the turbo or compressor. Today ICs are used in all supercharged engines, regardless of their fuel type - we offer much more efficient versions. FMIC intercooler, thanks to a large range of sizes, can be easily matched to most tuned cars. They can be used in both turbocharged and compressor engines. Thanks to the huge performance, our products are used in drift, streeet, as well as the most powerful dragsters in the country . Lowering the temperature in the intake allows for more aggressive tuning, resulting in higher power and torque. We offer tuning coolers such as FMIC.PL and JRSPEC. They have an efficient second type core with thick walls, made of polished aluminum of the highest quality. Choosing a branded product is a very important matter, a leak in the intake system can cause a drop in engine power and even damage the turbocharger. Roughly speaking, it can be assumed that air that is 10° C colder is denser by about 3-5%, which equates to a similar increase in engine performance. Originally installed coolers are able to cool the air by about 40%, their tuning counterparts are characterized by even greater efficiency so that even at extreme air temperatures the engine does not lose power. In our store you will also find single-sided intercoolers, which also have an efficient core with improved flows, guaranteeing high quality temperature reduction and excellent flow, so they do not clog the intake. This makes the single-sided cooler much easier to install in some cars, while still providing excellent temperature reduction.
What is the task of an intercooler? How to reduce the temperature of the charge air?
Intercooler is, in the simplest terms, an air cooler that acts as a heat exchanger, its task is to reduce the temperature of the charged air. The increase in pressure by compressing the air in the turbine or compressor causes a sharp increase in temperature, to use the full potential of supercharging it is key to build an intake system based on an efficient intercooler, which will ensure effective temperature reduction. Generating a lot of power is most simply achieved by increasing the supercharging of the engine, the increase in pressure in the intake system, forces additional air into the combustion chamber, improving the sleeping process. To increase the pressure in the system, we need to compress it, thereby raising its temperature. The supply of additional air at a high temperature will not provide the intended results, so we must take care to lower the temperature of the previously compressed air. Modern cars also use water exchangers.
Charge air cooler is a key component that has a direct impact on the combustion process of the fuel-air mixture, lowering the temperature of the air increases the density of the air, which brings the benefit of increasing the supplied oxygen to the combustion chamber. More oxygen, means the possibility of injecting an additional dose of fuel. which translates into a direct increase in engine power and torque. Cooler air also translates into lower emissions of harmful compounds along with exhaust gases, and more efficient combustion of the mixture can carry benefits even in terms of fuel consumption.
Intercooler - Types
The type of intercooler is dedicated to its location. There are four main groups :
- FMIC ( Front Mounted Intercooler) is the term for intercoolers mounted centrally on the front belt. This is the most common solution in cars equipped with a supercharged engine. The popularity of FMIC is dictated by the simplicity of installation and, of course, the best flow of cold air coming in through the bumper and directed directly at the intercooler core. More air flowing into the core directly improves its efficiency, a solution that maximizes the efficiency of the intercooler is the installation of water spray on its core providing additional cooling of the intercooler, which also contributes to improving its efficiency . The disadvantages of this type of installation include the complicated shape and the greatest length of the air supply lines to the intercooler.
- TMIC (Top Mounted Intercooler) A term referring to intercoolers mounted above the engine. This solution is not the best solution when it comes to heavily supercharged power units due to low efficiency caused by two factors, i.e. Poor flow of cool air through the intercooler, and its heating by high ambient temperatures caused by the close presence of the engine. Among the advantages of TMIC solutions is the shortest possible path between the intercooler and the engine, the case is that the compressor reaches the target pressure faster, and the volume of air in the supercharger piping is as small as possible.
- SMIC (Side Mounted Intercooler) or coolers mounted on the side of the vehicle, usually near the wheel arch, are solutions forced by the lack of space for an efficient intercooler in the front part of the vehicle. Usually these solutions are not characterized by high efficiency due to limited airflow defined only by inlets in the bumper. Often manufacturers use two coolers on either side of the vehicle to increase cooling efficiency. In the case of mechanical tuning, in order to increase the efficiency of lowering the air temeperature, it is necessary to change the SMICs to more efficient tuning equivalents or to switch to a central FMIC type IC.
- V-Mount are systems in which the intercooler is positioned in such a way that when viewed in profile it forms a V along with the water cooler. The IC adopts a vertical position with a forward tilt, while the water cooler is close to horizontal. The obvious downside of such a solution is the need for a large amount of space in the front part of the vehicle, and the need to make an outlet for warm air passing through the IC. However, this solution carries a number of advantages in the form of relatively short piping between the cooler and the engine, due to the inlet and outlet of cooled air located close to the engine, and also protects the intercooler from damage and direct contact with the ground. In the case of properly constructed air ducts, the V-Mount ensures the flow of cold air at a high level not only through the cooler, but also through the water coolers, which translates into lower coolant temperatures.
