Saddle Tank Fuel Cell Conversion Kit Radium Engineering

This innovative fuel transfer system allows two motorsports fuel cells to be used in a vehicle, optimizing fuel carrying capacity and weight distribution. The fuel cells can be mounted strategically for optimal weight distribution and a low center of gravity.

REQUIRED COMPONENTS

  • Two Radium Engineering Fuel Cells. Different tank capacities can be used. However, the top flanges of each fuel cell should be mounted at the same height.
  • A Radium Engineering FCST-X. Previous FCST (non X) fuel cell surge tanks are not compatible. They do not have the required lift pump access (FCST-X handle).
  • A minimum of 3 Fuel Pumps are required (2 lift pumps, 1-3 fuel surge tank pumps). When sourcing lift pumps, be sure they have built-in check valves integrated into the outlets. Pumps without check valves can back-feed and create operational failures.
  • Remote Filler and Vent Kit, or Remote Mount Refueling Kit. Because 1.5in ID tubing is included, any Remote Mount Fuel Filler that has a 1.5in OD barb can work. The system is compatible with standard and dry break refueling systems.

RECOMMENDED

  1. One or two Radium Engineering Fuel Level Senders. If only one fuel level sender is installed, it is recommended to install it in the active fuel cell. It is, however, suggested to install 2 fuel level senders. NOTE: When two 0-90 ohm Radium Engineering fuel level senders are wired in series, a new 0 (empty)-180 (full) ohm range will be created. If wired to independent inputs of a programmable ECU, the passive side level sender can also be used to control the activation and deactivation of the passive side lift pump. This will prevent the pump from running when the passive side tank is empty.
  2. 20-0461 Radium Engineering Fuel Level Switch. This installs into the 1/8” NPT port located on the underside plate of the fuel surge tank. This can trigger a relay or provide an ECU input to control the active side lift pump. When the fuel level float is in the high position (fuel surge tank = full), the active side lift pump can be switched OFF.

NOTES

  • The rollover valve in the FCST-X is removed and the vent port becomes the overflow for air and fuel to pass back to the passive side. The rollover valve vent fitting is relocated from the FCST-X to the new fuel cell vent port on the passive side.
  • Because of the new vent fitting placement, it is mandatory that the active fuel cell fills up just prior to the passive fuel cell. Depending on how the 1.5" OD stainless steel TEE is oriented for fuel fill plumbing, the refueling hoses can be routed one of 2 ways. This will depend on the filler location of the vehicle.
  • The TEE can be oriented vertically or horizontally to change which fuel cell fills first. Notice how the (fender-mounted) fuel filler moves to the opposite side of the system depending on TEE orientation. This is based on the path of least resistance (fluid dynamics).
  • The kit allows the units to be mounted in the vehicle either transversely or longitudinally. Fittings and hoses for both configurations are included.
  • Some custom logic to control the passive cell's lift pump will be required. It will need to use a level sender resistance signal to know when the passive cell is emptied so that it can shut the passive side lift pump down at that time.
  • The active fuel cell lift pump can be controlled using the fuel level diagnostic switch. It will turn ON any time the surge tank level drops.
