Suspension control arms

A control arm is an articulated link that connects the car's chassis to the suspension supporting the wheel. It is attached by a single control arm pin and a bushing usually of rubber or polyurethane. In the case of adjustable control arms, they have a built-in bolt, which, when removed and countered by nuts, extends the control arm and changes the camber angle.

Automotive suspensions have different types of construction (based on aluminum, metal, single or multi-link control arms), the construction of the main component, however, is always very similar. Let us emphasize that the construction of the control arm must be made of very durable materials, resistant to damage and deformation. The control arm carries very heavy loads and has a very large impact on safety, its breakage while driving can cause loss of control of the car, so it is important to choose a proven product.

In theory, a control arm should be able to improve a car's handling by reducing body roll and increasing traction. In practice, however, this type of control arm is often too stiff, resulting in excessive vibration and lack of ride comfort when driving into bumps. Therefore, many manufacturers choose to install a multi-link suspension, which significantly improves vibration damping characteristics, better absorbs vibrations and improves the car's handling characteristics.

Adjustable control arms and rods are an essential component of any car built for motorsport. They provide the ability to set the right angles, which are necessary for the proper handling of the car depending on the intended operation.

By adjusting the length of the control arms and tie rods, you can adjust camber, kingpin advance and toe angles. This allows the car's suspension to be fine-tuned to maximize traction, minimize body roll and provide a more comfortable driving experience.

Adjusting the camber angle helps improve tire pressure distribution.

Zero camber would be an ideal choice, but only if we assume that the car would be traveling straight ahead, on a perfectly level road. Of course, this situation has nothing to do with normal, let alone motorsport operation of the car, which is why adjustable control arms that allow you to adjust the angle of the wheel relative to the ground are essential in any sports car.

An analysis of the forces acting on the tire during cornering gives us a clear picture - different forces act on the tire as a result of centrifugal force in different sections. The greatest pressure is seen on the outer side, this leads to an uneven distribution of forces, deformation of the tire and failure to use the full potential of grip. In addition to not using the tire's full potential, we also lead to a situation of overheating of the rubber in the most stressed sections when driving on the track or taking fast corners.

In order to distribute the forces over a larger section of the tire, it is necessary to bring the wheel into a camber situation and set a negative camber angle (negative camber). Such a setting makes the pressure on the inner side of the tire greater, and as the centrifugal force increases, it does not decrease as quickly.

How to set the right camber angle ?

Setting the right camber angle for a track car is quite a challenge, the number of parameters affecting the exact camber value is very wide. A common procedure is pre-setting, which we correct during test drives. A very helpful factor in selecting the right settings is temperature. Inspection of the temperature distribution on the surface of the tire allows us to visualize how the suspension works and whether adjustment is required.

In the case of street cars, setting the camber angle requires many compromises between handling and grip in fast corners, this causes a lot of problems for car manufacturers. A car set up for racing threads will wear the tires at a very fast and uneven rate, camber will cause uneven wear when driving straight, in the main the inner side of the tire will wear.

The ideal camber angle should balance the need for grip in fast turns and handling on straight roads, while minimizing tire wear. To achieve this, automakers must take into account many factors, such as road surface, suspension geometry and weight distribution.

In general, street cars require less negative camber than race cars, since they encounter straight roads more often than fast corners. The balance between handling and tire wear is usually achieved by setting the camber at -1 degree for the front wheels and -0.5 degree for the rear wheels. Note, however, that different vehicles may require different adjustments depending on their specific settings, so it is advisable to consult an experienced mechanic before making any changes.

Control arm replacement - When is it a good idea to replace the control arm with an adjustable one ?

 Replacing the control arm with an adjustable one is a common tuning element to improve the handling and/or visual characteristics. So when to make a suspension modification and perform an adjustable control arm installation ?

Suspension modification and replacement of control arms with adjustable ones should be done when the behavior of the car does not meet our expectations. This may be due to an increase in power, the desire for better grip / traction, or the need to lower / raise the height of the car.
